Château de L’Ou Secret de Schistes Blanc 2020
Bought in 1998, this is a family run estate created by the incredibly talented and passionate Séverine and Philippe Bourrier, and lies just to the south of Perpignan, in the plains region of the Roussillon. It consists of three separate terroirs, all farmed organically. The vineyard terroir for Chateau de L’Ou Blanc Cotes Du Roussillon consists of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain. The name of the estate comes from the Catalan word l’Ou, meaning egg, because of the egg-shaped well on the property.
Dubbed “A Rising Star in the Roussillon” by Jeb Dunnuck, their wines are exceptional.
The Secret de Schistes blanc is 100% organically grown, hand-picked Grenache Gris. Bourrier ferments half in stoneware amphorae and half in new 300-litre barrels. After blending the two components, she lets it sit for a couple of months in stainless steel before bottling. It likes a delicately silky envelope sealed with power and spice. The nose reveals a lovely minerality with iodine and curry notes. The palate is delicate and very long with notes of peach and ginger, finishing with an incredible freshness.
