Château de L’Ou Secret de Schistes 2020

$88.00

Bought in 1998, this is a family run estate created by the incredibly talented and passionate Séverine and Philippe Bourrier, and lies just to the south of Perpignan, in the plains region of the Roussillon. It consists of three separate terroirs, all farmed organically. The vineyard terroir for Chateau de L’Ou Blanc Cotes Du Roussillon consists of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain. The name of the estate comes from the Catalan word l’Ou, meaning egg, because of the egg-shaped well on the property.

Dubbed “A Rising Star in the Roussillon” by Jeb Dunnuck, their wines are exceptional.

Dark purplish ruby and full body with generous nose black berries, ripe plum, apples baked with spice and herbs, menthol, garrigue and charcuterie. Bright in mouth, it doles out its generosity progressively, in an enticing procession of rich and beautifully accented flavours… when one thinks one has isolated a taste, the wine is already giving another, and another. well-structured, beautifully balanced and very long

About The Product

This award-winning wine is described as a “Velvet Touch”. A rich complex blend of baked blackberries mixed with hints of herbal garrigue and wafts of violets all held within in a beautiful mouth feel. A sophisticated, rich, and delicious wine!

The handpicked grapes go directly into oak barrels. After 3-4 weeks every barrel is emptied and cleaned, the must is pressed, and the juice goes back into the same barrels to finish fermentation and aging.

“A big, meaty, mineral-laced Syrah, the dense purple-hued 2020 Cotes Catalanes Secret De Schistes offers up a great nose of blackberries, roasted herbs, chocolate, and graphite that develops more meaty and leather notes with time in the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated, and rich, it hits the palate with a soft, supple, seamless mouthfeel, impressive tannins, and a great finish.” Jeb Dunnuck

“Smells like red apples, polished church pews and walnuts. Violin-string tension, tangy, a little more chisel and groove and tactile bitterness than the classic L’Ou cuvée. Muscle and velvet. But despite the defining structural elements, the fruit explodes in the mouth – generous, wanting to share, spilling purple and deep blue and violets. The kind of wine you want to lick out the glass.” Jancis Robinson
