Château de L’Ou L’Ove Rouge 2016

$70.00

Bought in 1998, this is a family run estate created by the incredibly talented and passionate Séverine and Philippe Bourrier, and lies just to the south of Perpignan, in the plains region of the Roussillon. It consists of three separate terroirs, all farmed organically. The vineyard terroir for Chateau de L’Ou Blanc Cotes Du Roussillon consists of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain. The name of the estate comes from the Catalan word l’Ou, meaning egg, because of the egg-shaped well on the property.

Dubbed “A Rising Star in the Roussillon” by Jeb Dunnuck, their wines are exceptional.

A silky Syrah, with elegant aromas of violet, wild raspberry and spice through to a fruity palate with great mineral freshness on the finish.

The Syrah grapes come from the Côtes Catalans, which is the principle IGP allowing only mono-varietal wines. The vines thrive at an altitude of 350 metres in the Maury terroir, located in the northern part of the Roussillon region. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain-freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The soils are made up of alluvial marls of the Roussillon plain, which imparts notes garrigue and freshness. The vineyard is certified organic, no herbicides or chemicals are used. Yields are kept low to ensure good concentration of the pure fruit flavours and the fruit is hand-harvested at optimal maturity.

About The Product

The grapes were destemmed and macerated with selected yeasts for four weeks in a terracotta egg before being pressed. The wine was then returned to the egg to finish fermentation. The ovoid shape sets the lees into perpetual motion, naturally accentuating the varietal aromas and minerality, while requiring minimum intervention from the winemaker. Maturation lasted for nine months, resulting in elegant, fine tannins.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate – April 2017: 88-92+/100: The 2015 Côtes Catalanes Love is another Syrah cuvee from this estate and it’s still aging in amphora. Notes of spices, cured meats, earth and licorice are grounded by a core of dark, black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and balanced, with notable tannin, it will be better with short-term cellaring and drink well for a decade. I’m thrilled to see vignerons experimented with amphora and larger oak barrels, and I can’t wait to try this from bottle Syrah.
